Eigthseat vs Upwork and Fiverr: who should build your next feature?
If you build alone, sooner or later you hit the same wall: more work than hours. The usual answer is a freelance marketplace. Post a job on Upwork, buy a gig on Fiverr, wait for someone good to pick it up.
That still works. But there’s now a second option, and it’s worth knowing where each one fits.
What you’re actually buying
On a marketplace, you buy a person’s time. You write a brief, compare proposals, agree a price, hand over access to your code, and wait. A good freelancer brings judgment and experience you don’t have. A bad one costs you weeks.
With Eigthseat, you get a team that works through your own AI subscription. Seven AI specialists sit in seats 1–7: Product, Architect, Designer, Engineer, Quality, Release and Marketing. They work on your machine, inside your repo, through the Claude Code you already use. You sit in the eighth seat and decide what ships.
Side by side
| Upwork / Fiverr | Eigthseat | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Hourly or fixed price, plus platform fees | One flat monthly price (see Price), on top of the AI subscription you already have |
| Getting started | Write a brief, review proposals, interview | Describe the idea in plain words |
| Who sees your code | The freelancer, on their machine | Nobody else. Work happens on your machine. We store your board, never your code |
| How work arrives | A zip, a pull request, or a push to your repo | A branch per ticket, merged locally after you approve |
| Testing | Depends on the person | Quality runs your real tests and sends failures back, up to three times |
| Hours | Their time zone, their schedule | Whenever your machine is on |
| Scope changes | A new quote | A new ticket |
Where a freelancer still wins
Be honest with yourself about the job.
- Taste and judgment you don’t have. A senior designer who has shipped ten onboarding flows will spot things no prompt will.
- Work outside your repo. Sales calls, a brand identity, a video shoot.
- Someone accountable. When you need a person to own an outcome for months, hire a person.
Where the eighth seat wins
- The steady stream of product work. Small features, bug fixes, test coverage, release notes, launch copy. The work that piles up between big decisions.
- Your code stays put. No new contractor accounts, no copies of your repo on a stranger’s laptop.
- Nothing ships without you. Scope, design, merge, release and launch copy each wait for your approval. Nothing is pushed or posted until you say so.
- No briefing tax. The team reads your repo and your project notes. You don’t rewrite context for every new person.
Using both
Many founders will do both. Hire a freelancer for the design system, then let the Designer and Engineer seats apply it to every new screen. Pay an expert for a security review, then let the Quality seat run those checks on every ticket after.
The marketplace is for the work that needs a specific human. The eighth seat is for everything you’d otherwise do yourself at 11pm.
